Who Advocates for Students?

As a Dean, one thing that I have tried to communicate is that my philosophy for the nursing program is that of partnership.  I believe that we are partners in your journey to become a nurse and then to earn a baccalaureate degree.  In a good partnership, everyone does their part.  Doing your part means more than just learning the material, it also means understanding the policies that guide life as a Broward College student.

I often hear students say that they feel powerless or feel that they don’t have a voice.  My take on that is that students’ power comes from knowing and understanding student rights and responsibilities.  Unfortunately, this takes significant effort.  Nursing students already feel overloaded and overwhelmed with their classes, so spending time getting familiar with the college catalog and the nursing student handbook goes to the bottom of the priority list.  However, it’s important.

It is also important to know and understand who your advocates are here at Broward College.  Broward College has a Student Government Association to represent you.  This Association advocates for you and has a seat at the Broward College Board of Trustees meetings – a new development in the past couple of years under President Haile’s leadership.

On Wednesday, September 16, at 12:30 p.m. (so you might be able to attend, even if you have Wednesday clinical), there’s a student town hall via Zoom with your Student Government Association.  From the SGA Town Hall Fall 2020 flyer:

“These student leaders from across the college represent you and will advocate on your behalf any concerns you may have to the administration of Broward College so that we may better serve you.”

Take advantage of this opportunity to learn about the Student Government Association and how they can serve you!
