Remote Learning – Now What?

Hi Everyone!  For the Fall 2020 Term, the College is still functioning in the remote learning environment.  I’ve had a few students tell me, “I didn’t want to do an online program, that’s why I chose Broward College and now we’re online.”  It’s a bummer, we realize that, and not what everyone had planned for.  However, we are where we are and we have to deal with it.  Nurses are nothing if not flexible, so this is good preparation.

Remote delivery of classes is different than online.  There are many philosophical differences, but one of the main differences is that remote classes are considered synchronous and online classes are asynchronous.  Synchronous means that your attending class at the same time as your professor, you’re just attending from a different location.  Remote learning classes are held in real time, have regularly scheduled face-to-face meetings with your instructor on a live platform (Blackboard Collaborate or Zoom), at the regularly scheduled times as published in your course schedule.

You should treat your remote learning classes as you would treat your on-campus, in-person classes.  What does this mean?  This means you should go to class.

You might remember that I told you during orientation that being a good partner in this educational journey toward becoming a Registered Nurse means that you need to SHOW UP.

Will this be more challenging than attending classes physically on campus?  Possibly.  You might have more distractions from home or your remote location than you would on campus.  You might feel more disconnected from your professor.  You might feel more alone than in the physical classroom.

There might also be good things with remote learning.  Instead of driving to campus, you can spend that time studying.  Parking probably won’t be a problem from your remote location and you can save on gas money.  It’s safer than being in close quarters with people for hours at a time.  You probably don’t have to wear a mask during remote classes (depending on your remote location).

Again, we know this isn’t optimal for many of you.  Nothing that has happened since March has been optimal.  You all have the goal of becoming a Registered Nurse and just as nothing will stop you from taking good care of your patients when you become one, this will not stop you from graduating from this nursing program.

EVERYBODY has the potential to be successful in this program.
