Faculty Introduction

Welcome to CHM1040, General Chemistry A. This is an online internet-based course. It is a pleasure to have you as a student in my class and I look forward to meeting each of you during the term. I am professor Memari, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Broward College Central Campus, and I will be your instructor. I regularly teach Chemistry for Health Sciences(CHM 1032), General Chemistry I & II(CHM 1040, 1041, 1045, and 1046) for science majors, Organic Chemistry I & II (CHM 2210-2211) and Labs for all chemistry courses. Teaching and research is major part of my life.

Required online orientation

  • There is a mandatory online orientation which should be completed by end of the first week of the semester and must receive 9 out of 10 on the orientation quiz to continue with the course. The quiz is based on the syllabus. If the orientation quiz is not complete or not attempted you will need to drop the class by the end of drop/add for full refund or you may be withdrawn on last day of drop/add.
  • Please note dates of completion. In order to remain in the course all portions of the orientation module must be completed.
  • Proctored Exam Policy

This course may have proctored exams that must be taken at a campus e-Testing Center or at an alternate pre-approved testing location. For detailed instructions please visit our Proctored Exam Policy page. The Exams be available to you for 4-6 days each.

Course Description

First course in a three semester sequence of General Chemistry: CHM 1040, 1041, 1046. This sequence includes two laboratories: CHM 1045L to be taken concurrently with CHM 1041; and CHM 1046L to be taken with CHM 1046. This course introduces students to chemical measurements, stoichiometry, atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding, inorganic formula writing and the naming of inorganic compounds.

Methods of Instruction

“This is a 3 credit hour course. Normally, a three credit hour course would meet two or three times each week (during a 16 week term) for a total of 3 hours per week or 48 hours per term. In this class, we will meet “online” and you will engage in structured outside or online activities for the remainder of the class time.”

This section of CHM 1040 is a fully online course. This course may have proctored exams that must be taken at a campus e-Testing Center or at an alternate pre-approved testing location. For detailed instructions please visit our Proctored Exam Policy page.Your grade is determined by your performance on the midterm and final examinations and on timely and adequate completion of weekly Internet assignments. Assignment include online quizzes, group presentation, and class discussion questions related to content in your textbook and on the Internet. To successfully complete this course you must be able to maintain a disciplined study schedule and keep up with your assignments.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, The students should be able to:

  1. demonstrate a knowledge of the nature of chemistry, what it studies, the classification of matter, as well as properties, types of changes, and scientific measurements.
  2. describe the structure and components of atoms and apply these concepts to the information contained in the Periodic Table, as well as be aware of the classical experiments that lead to the present day models.
  3. explain concepts of ionic and covalent bonding, including the ability to predict molecular shapes and infer properties due to shape, such as polarity.
  4. write formulas for common inorganic substances, such as acids, bases and salts, and to name them.
  5. demonstrate a knowledge of the mole concept, and use it in calculations involving formulas and balanced equations.
