Nursing Judgement

When you are in the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree program at Broward College, you are working toward attainment of the end of program student learning outcomes and the second of these is Nursing Judgement.

The ASN faculty have determined that graduates who have met the Nursing Judgement outcome are able to incorporate critical thinking skills to the decision-making process in gathering of information based on evidence-based practice, interpretation of facts, implementation of bet practices, and evaluation of the outcomes of nursing care provided to the client across the lifespan.

As with all of the end of program student learning outcomes, this integrate concepts from professional standards.  One of these standards is the NCLEX-RN Detailed Test Plan.  We know that you will be tested on your nursing judgement when you take the NCLEX and are preparing you for entry into practice.

Another professional standard is the National League for Nursing (NLN) Competencies and Outcomes (2010) and the NLN believes that Nursing Judgement encompasses critical thinking, clinical judgment, and integration of best practices.  From the first day of your first nursing course, you realize that learning critical thinking is a huge part of this program.  Critical thinking means that you employ logic and reasoning to make decisions after identifying and evaluating all of the information you have available to you.  Knowledge isn’t enough – you have to know how to apply that knowledge.

Your HESI Exit Exam and NCLEX results are what we use to evaluate how we are doing in meeting this end of program student learning outcome of Nursing Judgement.
